AT&T: A History of Increasing Life Outcomes for Girls
The AT&T & BellSouth Foundation has been a proud supporter of Girls Incorporated of Greater Atlanta for over a decade. The synergy created by this partnership has helped to improve life outcomes for many of Atlanta’s girls. AT&T, committed to advancing education, strengthening communities and improving lives, has sponsored Girls Inc. programs like Operation Science, Math & Technology, the 2008 Girls Leadership Summit: She Votes, the 2009 Girls Summit: “Choices,” A Conference on Education & Career Planning, and most recently the 2010 Girls Inc. Capitol Day.
Scheduled for March 24th, the Girls Inc.’s Capitol Day will play host to middle girls from Coretta Scott King Academy as they will act as pages to legislators in the state Capitol for a day. Through this activity, girls will get to experience what a typical day is like for legislators and gain a better understanding of the legislative process. They will also be able to spend quality time with Senators and Representatives, asking questions, seeking advice and being inspired to advocate for issues that matter to them. Girls will also explore the Capitol building and meet with key legislators over lunch.
In addition to the unique hands-on-learning girls will gain through their experience at the Capitol, the organization will also present four scholarship awards to girls who write winning essays on the subject of the importance of girls/women’s voices to advocate for issues that affect their families and communities. Award applications will be reviewed by the AT&T’s corporate volunteers and presented to girls participating in Capitol Day. Girls are able to use scholarship funds for any education related expenses including college tuition, lap top computers, books, housing, etc.
AT&T has recently deepened its partnership in 2010 with a capacity building grant. Grant funds will be used by Girls Inc. to make technology upgrades designed to create efficiency and increase connectivity to agency supporters and to expand the center based academic enrichment program, providing girls with tutoring in an increased number of subject areas.
The special events and programs AT&T sponsors bring girls together with prominent educators, politicians and leaders, providing opportunities for girls to learn about new careers they would not normally be exposed to. We are proud to partner with AT&T for some of the most meaningful opportunities we offer the girls of Atlanta.
