The theme for our 2010 Girls Summit is “SMART Girls are Green,” based on the signature Girls Inc. Operation SMART (Science, Math and Technology) program. The purpose of this program is to encourage girls to consider careers in science, math or technology by engaging them in “green” activities. Girls will have an opportunity to recognize how they can become more engaged in environmental conservation and explore science and technology in their day to day lives.

We at Girls Incorporated of Greater Atlanta believe that the lack of female representation in the fields of science, math and technology, exist because girls are not encouraged to pursue science and engineering past high school. From an early age, girls pick up on the subtle messages that science, math and technology are “male” in nature. Girls Incorporated dispels that myth, while getting girls excited about learning and pursuing careers in these typically male dominated fields.

The Girls Summit is Girls Incorporated of Greater Atlanta’s way of helping girls to understand the significance and importance of environmental careers and educational study in the fields of science, math and relevant technology. In workshops conduced by GE employees and other corporate female volunteer facilitators, as well as a panel discussion of female industry leaders, girls will:

  • Understand the importance of being environmentally conscious;
  • Be able to identify Science, Math and Technology used in their day to day lives and begin to consider non-traditional careers associated with these areas of study;
  • Connect Science, Math and Technology to the improvement of our environment; and,
  • Learn what they can do to positively impact their environment.

We intend for girls to leave the summit with a foundation of knowledge designed to help them take an interest in their environment and encourage them to consider non-traditional STEM careers and educational paths.
